"eat from home" month

In an effort to save money (starting a new job next week and had to quit my bartending job, therefore reducing the amount of money in my pocket), I've decided to try to eat as many meals as possible from my cupboards/fridge. I started by cleaning the kitchen to see what expired and what I have to work with. I found that I buy a lot and then don't use it, so here goes....

yesterday's eats:
breakfast was banana nut cheerios and vanilla soymilk
lunch was a bowl of wolfgang puck chicken tortilla soup
dinner - spinach and blueberry salad with raspberry vinagarette and a small bowl of potato soup (it ended up being very salty so most of it went into the fridge for someone else to eat)
snacks included - banana with almond butter, blue corn chips and salsa...and other things, which I cannot remember right now

today I started off with a "nest egg" (cut a hole in a piece of toast and cook the egg in it), a glass of soymilk, and a small bowl of blueberries

at lunch, I didn't not eat at home. I was running errands with my mom and she bought me lunch at Subway...veggie sub and a fountain diet coke (I get strange cravings for fountain drinks)

dinner, which I just finished eating, was a MASSIVE spinach salad with chicken, feta, strawberries, the last of my blueberries, and raspberry vinegarette. I also had an amazing roll that was made with honey butter. I'm not normally crazy about rolls but this was SO GOOD!

I also had some snacks that I don't remember and later I am going to attempt to make a strawberry/mango smoothie for mamacita so I will probably have some of that.

In hindsight - I really need to buy a camera, not only will it help me remember what I ate (undocumented snacks) but it will also make this blog a little more exciting.

Oh, I also spent 30 minutes on the elliptical while my nephew was napping...good stuff!

September 1 - I'm Ready!

I've been...not blogging. I would love to do this regularly but I'm not sure if I'm completely into it. However, today is the first day of September and I start a new job in exactly one week and it seems like the perfect time. Now, if you want, you can take some time to get to know me.

My name is Becca. I'm 26 years old and live just south of Pittsburgh, PA. I've always been interested in getting healthier, but I'm not exactly someone that you would think of as healthy. I've belonged to gyms off and on since college (I am a Slippery Rock University graduate and loved the college days as a double major in English Education and Theatre) but I never really went to the gym regularly.

Last winter, I was googling something random and one website that came up was www.healthytippingpoint.com I read this blog and was hooked and began to go through more and more blogs....love them all! I've never been a blog reader but I was so inspired by all of these women who are right around my age. That was when I decided that I wanted to change my life. I've been taking small steps and have had many major setbacks (willpower) and that is a big reason why I haven't started regularly blogging (I can't post a day when all I had for lunch was a "dirt" dessert because my neighbor sent it over!) I did my first 5k (walk) on Mother's Day, Race for the Cure, for which I organized a team of friends and family members, including my 86 year old grandmother (a breast cancer survivor). I was hooked, I loved being around so many people. Due to not too much money because of not working much this summer, that was all I've been able to do.

So, fast forward through the few blog posts to the beginning of September. I'm set, I'm ready! Yesterday I went to http://www.fleetfeetpittsburgh.com/ and, for the first time, got fitted for tennis shoes by someone that listened to what I was doing and wanted to do and any foot problems (overpronating and the need for an ankle brace when walking more than a mile) He set me up with some Saucony's (very odd to go for this when I'm used to shopping for pretty pink nike's...just because they're pink and nike's) But I love them! I also have a 5k coming up in 2 weeks, which will become the start of my competitive walking (maybe turn into running some day?) career.

I also hope to use this blog to document my meals, keeping me on track. I've never been much of a cook but I've declared September "eat from home month" in order to save money. I've gotten so many ideas from blogs but haven't used that many of them. However, I will not have many pictures up because my camera has officially died.

If you read this the whole way through, I'm impressed. I feel like I overwrote and added a lot of side thoughts but once I started rambling, I couldn't seem to stop. Please join me on this journey and I hope that it's a good ride!
